Only the sound of Erd’s and my footsteps could be heard echoing throughout the hallway as we made our way down to the main living space. I stopped in front of the Cadets' hall and Squad Leaders' hall, picking up the others as I went.

Soon, we were at the main living space. I heard hear excited and nervous voices of the kids who would soon be a part of the Survey Corps’ strongest unit. I internally smirked at the idea that these brats were, in fact, still kids, yet look at how far they’d come. Fresh out of training, and they were already working with the best.

I approached the hall and the door opened automatically. I stepped inside and all the brats that had been lounging around looked up at us before quickly running to get into a line. They saluted us quickly, standing straight and tall, all looks of excitement wiped from their faces as they stared at us.

We stepped inside and I eyed them all down. The others waited in a group behind me as I walked down the line of kids. Some were big, some were small, and each looked at me with some sort of determined gaze. It even more plain to see now, looking at their actual faces instead of their profile pictures, that not all of them were going to be powerhouses through strength alone.

I went back to the middle of the group and I nodded. “At ease, Cadets.” They all relaxed their stances a bit, putting the salute down, but kept standing rigid as they looked at me. I showed them the papers I was holding and continued.

“You’re all here because you want to join the Survey Corps, and the higher ups somehow decided that you’re all above the rest in some way or another. If you decide that you actually want to stay here, you will be joining the highest, most elite team in the entire Survey Corps. It won’t be easy. If you decide that you’re not ready,” I pointed to the door. “There’s the exit. I don’t want to deal with you if you’re not going to put in the effort to be here.”

No one moved, but one boy with brown hair and green eyes called out, “There’s no one here who disregards the Castle so much that they’d even think about stepping onto its grounds without the whole-hearted intention of giving their all, sir!”

I looked at the boy. His eyes shone with some sort of craziness, determination, and unknown power. I smirked at him. “Oh? Is that so?”

“Sir!” they all called out. I smirked at all of them before I walked over to a paper shredder. They all watched me as I then held up the papers and put them through the shredder. You could hear the whirring as all the papers were destroyed.

I turned around to their shocked faces, walked back to the middle, and eyed them all down. “Here, in the Castle, we do things differently. If you’re here, that means you’ve already proven yourselves worthy to everyone else that matters. In that case, your profiles aren’t necessary. I don’t trust everyone, but one of those making the decision is our Commander, Erwin Smith.”

They all watched me intently, listening to my voice as if it held the answers to the questions of the universe. I continued, “Remember, those of us here are all special. You’re no different from us in that regard. I don’t expect you, no matter how good you were before, to be outstanding amongst us. We’re all veterans. You’re fresh meat.” I blinked before motioning to the shredder. “That. That was me giving you a fresh start. None of you are going to tell me that you can’t do it, or to look at your profile and say to me that the reason you’re not here is not the thing you’re training in.” I motioned to everyone behind me. “Here in the Castle, we’re a family that works together. If you can’t work with us, I’ll personally hand you over to the Garrison or Military Police before you can even think to say ‘sorry.’ Understood?”

They all smiled at me, clearly happy with what I said, though I don’t understand why. Did I say something funny?

“Sir, yes, sir!” They chanted, almost laughing.

I nodded at them. “Now, your profiles are gone. You are to introduce yourselves to us.” I nodded. “And become part of our family.”

Hanji laughed from behind me. “Hey Levi, what’s with the beautiful speech? It’s not like you.”

Not bothering to turn around, I growled, “Shut up, four-eyes. Erwin told me to welcome them. I did as I was told.”

She laughed and came up to me, draping an arm over my shoulder. “Maybe you should introduce yourself to them first. You’re our leader. Set a good example.”

I looked at them, and their faces seemed eager, so I sighed and pushed her off of me. I straightened myself up, saluted the brats, and called out, “I’m Levi Ackerman, the Lance Corporal of the Survey Corps and your superior. I’m a human from Earth, more specifically the Underground District.”

They all had wide eyes. Hanji laughed and saluted next to me. “I’ll go next! Yo! I’m Hanji Zoe. I’m the Squad Leader of Squad 4 and a Kyojin researcher! I might be a bit crazy, but trust me, I’m actually a human from Earth as well! I’m from the Middle District! Nice to meet you all!”

Mike walked up. “I’m Mike Zacharius. I’m also a Squad Leader, though I’m not human. Zacharius isn’t my name. My species is called the Zacharians. We’re famous for our strong sense of smell. Zacharians come from the Maria District.”

“Gunther Shultz. A human from Earth’s moon. So, Earth Moon District.”

“Petra Ral. I’m a species called Rosians. I’m from the Rose District. My species is known for having light healing abilities. I can heal minor wounds for you guys.” She smiled.

“Oluo Bozard, brats. I’m a human from the Inner District. I’m your superior, so don’t cross paths with me.” Petra glared at him but opted to remain silent.

“Well, now. I’m Erd Jinn. I’m second in command to Levi, or should I say Corporal? That makes me third in command of the Survey Corps. I’m a human from the Middle District. Same as Hanji.”

Our introductions were now over. We relaxed our positions. I looked over at them before settling on the green-eyed boy from before. “You start.” I commanded.

“Sir!” he exclaimed as he saluted. “I’m Eren Jaeger! A human, but my family lived in the Shiganshina District! I’m of European descent!”

“Why are you here?” I asked.

“I don’t understand, sir!”

“Why’d you choose the Survey Corps, Eren Jaeger?”

He seemed surprised by my question, but then his face turned into a weird angry glare which to most would seem scary. It made him look like a lunatic, but then he grit his teeth and said, “Many reasons. First, I want to explore the universe. I don’t want to be trapped anywhere. But also,” his expression turned even darker. “I want to rid the universe of the Kyojin, once and for all! I want to destroy them for killing my mother, and for keeping the rest of the universe trapped under their rule!”

I smirked. “I see. You’ll do fine here.”

A girl walked up and saluted. “I’m Mikasa Ackerman, a human. Half European, half Japanese. I’m Eren’s adopted sister. Also lived in Shiganshina District.”

A weaker looking blonde boy stood up. “I-I’m Armin Arlert! A human but I also lived in Shiganshina!”

“We seem to have a lot from Shiganshina this year. It’s famous for having a lot of strong soldiers.” I looked at them. “I hope you’re here by your own power and not because of your District’s reputation.”

Eren grinned. “You’ll find out soon enough, sir!”

I looked to a boy with two different hair colours. He noticed me looking at him and saluted. “I’m Jean Kirstein! A human who’s family comes from the Trost District over in a farther Galaxy!”

“Your district too. I hope you’re strong.”

“I’m one of the best, sir!”

“Why’d you come here? You don’t seem like the type to want to put your life on the line.”

He paused before looking grim. “I’m not. I honestly don’t really want to be here and I’m questioning my sanity for joining. But,” he looked at me with determined eyes. “I chose this place, even though I don’t want to be here, because I realized that it’s the place I need to be in. I’d feel safe everywhere else, but only here can I contribute anything at all to humanity!”

“What made you change your mind?” I asked. He looked to the ground before saying, “The death of my best friend at the hands of those monsters.”

I looked to the girl next to him, and she saluted. “Krista Lenz! A human from the Inner City District! I’m here to make a difference, sir!”

The girl next to her saluted. “Ymir. I’m not a human, and my species don’t use surnames or titles. I’m a species called the Lords back in the Outer District. It’s far, but I lived in the Inner City District since I was a kid. I’m here because I want to protect Krista.”

A pair of huge kids stood up. The blonde one saluted. “I’m Reiner Braun. A half human, half Armorian from the Armored District.”

The other one smiled and saluted. “I’m Bertholdt Hoover. Also a half human, half Armorian from the Armored District.”

A girl with her hair in a ponytail saluted. “My name is Sasha Braus, sir! I’m a human from the Huntress District in the Mountain Galaxy!”

A boy with a shaved head gave me a grin and saluted. “Connie Springer! A human from the Rukago District in the other side of the Milky Way Galaxy!”

Ten of them. I looked at the eleventh and last one.

He was a short boy, slightly shorter than me but taller than the girl named Krista. Something about him seemed strange though, and not in the way that anyone joining the Survey Corps would seem to another. No, he struck me as strange in another way, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. He just looked… different.

He stood up, his brown eyes looking at me. He saluted and said in a confident but nervous voice, “I’m Jay Nara, a human from Earth’s Class District.” I stared at the kid before looking away again, not letting the feeling that there was something different distract me.

I looked across the eleven that had come and nodded. “You’re all now a part of the Survey Corps and members of the Castle.” All of the others stepped up and said, “Welcome to our family!”

I turned to leave as the others began talking, telling them rules and regulations, giving them chores to take care of on different days, what kind of punishments they’ll receive if they slack off, and which rooms they’d stay in.

Hanji laughed and told them, “We’re all family. Treat us superiors and veterans with respect, but treat us as one of your own! You know, like an older sibling or something! Be comfortable around us!”

They all laughed and that was the last I heard before the automatic door shut behind me. I ruffled my hair a bit before walking down the hallway back to my office. There was really nothing more for me to do.

As soon as I entered my room, I snapped my fingers. “System on.” I said.

“Partial or full system, sir?”

“Full.”

The entire room lit up, the digital surfaces rebooted, and everything came back to life. I sat down in my chair and just looked at the news report for different districts on Earth. After about half an hour, I got a call from Erwin.

I pressed the digital marker, accepted the call, and enlarged the frame so I could actually talk to him face to face.

“Good evening, Levi.”

“What do you want, Erwin?”

“Always to the point as usual. I’m checking up to see if all the new recruits arrived at the Castle alright.”

“Yeah, all eleven of them.”

He chuckled before I saw him take a sip of tea. Then he looked at me. “What are your thoughts on them, Levi?”

“They seem promising from what I can tell from body postures and all that, but I won’t know anything until I’ve seen them in battle. Some are stranger than others, but I guess we can only attract weirdos in a place like the Survey Corps.”

Erwin straight up laughed at that before nodding. “I’ll bet. Anyway, treat them well. I’ll be back in two days. The conferences here are taking forever, so I’ll probably be back late at night. I’ll see you then.”

“Yeah.”

“Oh, don’t be like that. This is the Inner City District. I’ll bring you back some of that expensive tea you like, so stop treating me like I stuck you on babysitting duty.” I nodded and sighed. “That’s not the problem, but thanks. I’ll prepare dock 3 for your arrival in two days’ time.”

“Wonderful. See you then, Levi.” I ended the call without saying a farewell. He was coming soon anyway. I saw no point.

Exiting the video screen for the call, I realized I had no more work to do for today. I got up before walking out to the kitchen for some water.

When I entered, all the Cadets and Squad Leaders were there, eating. I looked at the time digitally placed on the wall. Six thirty. Dinner time.

“Look who showed up today!” Hanji exclaimed. “Are you actually going to eat with us?” I looked at her before walking past her and into the kitchen. Coming back with a bottle of water, I answered, “I didn’t realize it was dinner time. I just came for water.”

“Come on, Levi! There’s enough food for all of us! Why not eat a bit with the new recruits?” Hanji insisted. I frowned but decided that eating something wouldn’t hurt, considering I hadn’t eaten all day. I just don’t eat much. I forget, in all honesty.

A robot rolled over with tonight’s dinner: rice and fish. I picked it up, and the robot rolled away. I looked around and saw an empty seat next to Jay, so I walked over and sat down. Jay looked at me in acknowledgement, but said nothing.

Picking up my chopsticks, I ate the food. The others were conversing, and Jay actively participated, leaving me more or less ignored.

When I was about half-way done my meal, Jay spoke up. “Aren’t you going to converse with us, sir?” I looked at him, his brown eyes staring at me, anticipating an answer. I frowned, trying to figure out what it was about him that made me that he was hiding something. I noticed he was still waiting for an answer, so I replied, “I’m not much for conversation unless someone else strikes it up with me. I’m not good at… connecting.” I answered.

He smirked before he turned his body around to look at me. He drank some water before stating, “Well, since you’re here anyway, sir, it would be a waste to simply not talk with you.” I blinked, not understanding. He was thinking about something before he finally asked me, “What’s your favourite colour, sir?”

I blinked again. “You… you’re trying to strike up a conversation with me, and that’s the best you can come up with?” He shrugged and waited for an answer. I sighed. “I don’t have one.”

He frowned. “Um… how old are you, sir?”

“None of your business.” He raised a questioning eyebrow at me, so I smirked and told him, “I don’t tell people I barely know how old I am. Why? Because everyone, no matter the species, puts a value on age. If I told you I’m too young, it makes me seem unreliable due to a lack of life experience. If I tell you I’m too old, it makes me seem like my usefulness is running out. However, different people think of what is ‘too young’ and ‘too old’ as different, so I just opt to not say anything at all.”

He laughed at that. It was a simple laugh that resonated throughout the dining hall, and the others turned to look at us. He then said while chuckling, “I don’t think anyone can think that about you, sir. After all,” he smiled at me. “You’re the best.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. It was a given that I was the best. I was stronger than even other species who are naturally stronger than humans. But to be told so bluntly like that, without any motives or teasing, or anything to make me skeptical, and not even through admiration, but just through a simple fact to support an argument….

Safe to say, this was a first for me.

Jay stood up and said, “Excuse me. I’m tired, so I think I’ll retire early tonight.” He motioned the robot over and gave it his dishes. “Thank you.” He said to the robot. The robot beeped and rolled away.

He turned to us and saluted. “I’ll put away my stuff and retire for the night. Good night, everyone.” After hearing everyone say their good night, he walked away.

“Strange kid.” I muttered.

Later that night, Hanji came to speak with me in my office. I decided to get a head start on tomorrow's work, since I had nothing better to do.

“The new kids seem pretty cool, huh Levi?” She asked. I just signed a document and began looking at the next one.

“They seem pretty reliable. I think that Armin kid is here by brainpower. He seems really smart.”

“…” I gave no response as I frowned at the document in front of me.

“Levi! Will you just converse with me for one minute?” I sighed and looked at her. “What?”

“Is there anyone that caught your eye? You know? They seem interesting to you? I personally like those Eren and Armin kids. They seem interesting.”

I leaned back in my chair and thought about it. “Eren and… Jay I suppose.” Hanji blinked in confusion. “Jay? Why Jay?” I looked at Hanji. “Don’t know. But the brat caught my interest. Seems a bit different, but I can’t put my finger on why.”

“Is that so? I don’t see anything particularly special, but now that you mention it, the kid does seem off to me. I wonder why.”

“Who knows?” I got up. “I’m going to get some tea.”

“I’ll come too. I want some coffee.”

We walked down the hallway and came to the kitchen. Inside, I saw Reiner, Bertholdt, and Jean sitting around. They were sipping what appeared to be hot chocolate, though it could be some other drink from their Districts.

They saluted me, but I waved them off and began heating up some water. Hanji then said, “Hey guys, you’ve been with the others this entire time through training, right?” They nodded. “So, is it just our imagination, or is Jay a little weird?”

Jean leaned back in his chair. “Yeah, he’s weird, but not in a bad way.”

Reiner nodded. “The kid is just different.”

Hanji sat down with them. “How so?”

Jean shrugged. “He doesn’t really hang with the rest of us. Like, we’re friends and all, but he doesn’t put in the effort to join us in any activity that involves going outside. It’s like he doesn’t want to hang around us or something, but at the same time, you can tell he loves being around us.”

Bertholdt spoke up. “He’s always the first to bed, and either the first or last to get up in the morning. Most of the time, he’s fine, but he always finds a way to avoid any alone time with anyone.”

I poured my tea and said, “Sounds like he has problems.” They watched me leave.

As I was walking back to my office, I saw someone walking toward me. As they approached, I saw it was Jay. He was wearing his pajamas, showing that he was ready for bed. Jay smiled and saluted me, but said nothing. I studied him for a moment before he asked, “Is something the matter, sir?”

I frowned. “You’re different. I don’t know how, but you are.” He tilted his head in confusion before he snickered. “Is that so, sir? Does it bother you because I’m different?”

“As if. It bothers me that I can’t figure out what the hell is different about you.” I walked past him. “But of course, I plan to figure it out.”

He laughed and I heard him say, “What if I don’t want you to find out?” I stopped and glanced back at him to see he was watching me. “Well then, I guess we’ll have a war.”

He nodded and bowed to me – a shocking surprise since I’m usually only saluted to – and he turned to leave. “Good night, sir.”

“Good night, Cadet Nara.”

I do not own SnK/AoT

It belongs to Hajime Isayama and the anime stations that played them

So this isn't an interesting chapter, I know, but I wanted to get introductions out of the way. The concepts in this fanfic are a bit different than my previous ones, and I wanted to use this chapter to get a bit of back-story and stuff out of the way to help with the rest of the story.

Sorry it isn't very good so far.... I hope you'll stay with me for now. Please and thank you!!!!
